¡¡¡¡China rejected accusations on Jun 18th that it is practicing protectionism in its USD585 billion stimulus package. Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang denied accusations that an official document ordered Chinese government offices to discriminate against foreign companies, and ran counter to the government's earlier commitment to support free trade and avoid protectionism.
¡¡¡¡On June 1st, the National Development and Reform Commission issued a controversial notice that said that government investment projects should purchase domestically made products unless those products cannot be obtained in China. The notice also said that purchases of imports must be approved by relevant government agencies.
¡¡¡¡"The purpose of issuing the notice is to ensure a fair and competitive market,"Qin said. Qin said the notice complied with China's government procurement law of 2002 and with common international procurement practices, and that foreign enterprises and products would face no discrimination.
