¡¡¡¡Container throughput in the port of Hong Kong fell to 5.2 million TEUs in the second quarter of 2009, down 17 percent from the same quarter last year as the global recession cut deeply into imports and exports. ¡¡¡¡Within this total, laden containers decreased by 15 percent to 4.5 million TEUs, while empty containers dropped by 27 percent to 0.8 million TEUs. ¡¡¡¡In the first half of 2009, the port of Hong Kong handled 9.8 million TEUs, which was down 18 percent from the same period in 2008. Within this total, laden containers decreased by 18 percent to 8.3 million TEUs, while empty containers dropped by 20 percent to 1.6 million TEUs. ¡¡¡¡On a seasonally adjusted quarter-to-quarter comparison, laden container throughput increased by 7 percent in the second quarter of 2009. |
