Qingdao Port Adopt Energy-Saving Practices

¡¡¡¡From the three areas of management, science and technology, as well as operation, a ¡°Green Port¡± campaign is being promoted to save energy as well as to reduce emissions.

¡¡¡¡While y-o-y quarterly production increased by 13.9% in the first three months of this year, unit energy consumption dropped 4.1% simultaneously. This is a positive contrast between ups and downs achieved by Qingdao Port in 2008.
¡¡¡¡To save energy and fully explore potential; to create unlimited capacity as well as more valuable wealth with limited resources; to strive for a modern port that is resource-efficient, environment-friendly, independent and innovative, qualified and economical, harmonious......every possible means to save energy has penetrated into all aspects of Qingdao Port,s daily work.

¡¡¡¡Innovation saves energy

¡¡¡¡It has always been advanced technology that has multiplied efficiency. After applying a series of scientific and technological transformations as well as innovation, Qingdao Port has achieved remarkable records in energy-saving technologies.
¡¡¡¡Container mobile cranes and general cranes changed power sources ¡°from diesel to electricity¡±. Container mobile cranes are highly diesel consuming, noisy and seriously contaminating, and these are all technical barriers vexing container terminals globally. Xu Zhenchao and his ¡°Zhenchao Team¡± first mastered automatic direction-correcting technology in mobile crane large carts, then accomplished the ¡°diesel to electricity¡± transformation. In this way, electricity from the city¡¯s power network is directly transmitted to cranes. Now, the electricity-powered mobile cranes are able to save more than 35% the energy, while transport of each container consumes just 1.9 kwh. Operating costs have thus dropped by over 70% and 4.8 million litres of diesel can be spared each year.
¡¡¡¡At present, Tianjin, Ningbo, Yantian and Shekou in Shenzhen, HIT and MOL in Hong Kong have all been using this technology, making fairly significant economic and social benefits.
¡¡¡¡Container crane operation is upgraded from ¡°lifting¡± to ¡°moving.¡± Technical staff have found in repeated tests that it would be more efficient to move containers by large carts than to lift them by beams in making the right-of-way over departing vessels. Within a 60-metre distance, carts moving obviously consumes less than beam lifting. If each operation saves 24 kwh, the annual quantity can mount to 640,000 kwh, equivalent to about RMB 450,000 saved.
¡¡¡¡Technological transformations have also been achieved with reefer containers. Qingdao Port is China¡¯s largest base for reefer container import and export, therefore consuming atremendous amount of power. To reduce power consumption effectively, Qingdao Port has introduced an advanced intelligent filter power saver for reefer containers energy-saving technological transformation. Post-implementation, reefer containers save more than 10% of energy, accounting for over 700 million kwh, equivalent to exceeding RMB 5.3 million.

¡¡¡¡Optimising operation improve efficiency

¡¡¡¡In each step of manual operation, there exist ways to save energy. Thus improving staff ¡¯s skills became the very point at which Qingdao Port started to break through.
¡¡¡¡It has attached great importance to training and upgrading technicians¡¯ general skills. Over the past 19 years, Qingdao Port has been holding the annual promotion examination and skill contests upon skilled workers. Particularly through training activities such as ¡°Learn more from Xu Zhenchao¡±, and ¡°practicing challenging skills¡±, the majority of staff have been gathering from the actual operation a lot of new ideas, new methods and new skills, effectively promoting the acquisition of energy-saving skills.
¡¡¡¡Staff brand has become core to Qingdao¡¯s competitiveness. ¡°Zhenchao Efficiency¡± and ¡°Sun Bo Efficiency¡± are well celebrated in the shipping industry. Both have world-class efficiency in handling Qingdao Port¡¯s two essential goods (containers and ore) and thus similar brands are triggered to come out one after another. From 2004 and since, Qingdao Port Group has named 50 staff brands, covering the frontier loading and unloading areas, secondary and tertiary port-related industries. Implementation of new skills have continuously improved the handling efficiency: from previously the world record 70.3 boxes handled per hour, cranes now are able to handle 94.9 natural boxes hourly, all while unit power consumption has dropped 9.7% from 2.78 to 2.51 kwh. The ¡°Sun Bo Efficiency¡± in ore unloading established the world record of 5,698 tons/hour early in 2003, and it has increased to 6,308 tons/hour, with unit power consumption dropping by 1.5%. Qingdao Port first broke the pulp operations world record by 825 tons/hour in 2003, but the current 2,278 tons/hour has saved power by 15%.
¡¡¡¡Optimising release processes can reduce energy consumption. Rather than sticking to the traditional simple way of loading vehicles by their orders entering the harbour, now those with bigger capacity and advanced serial no. will be firstly treated. The 24-hour release amount has doubled from the original 100 units, therefore greatly improving the efficiency and reducing the fuel consumption.

¡¡¡¡Eco-management strengthening clean production

¡¡¡¡Qingdao Port has adopted three major projects - blue sky, clear water, and ecological balance - so as to nurture an environmentally friendly port.
¡¡¡¡In the coal and ore handling area, dust-removing facilities, sprinklers and wind-sealing devices have been arranged; in the coal and ore yard, nearly 400 sets of sprinklers and spray guns have been set-up; research into dust suppression agents is also seeking ways to form a protective layer over coal and ore piles¡¯to prevent dust.
¡¡¡¡The wall of wind dust suppression was completed at the end of 2007, being a major countermove in promoting clean production. The project investment is nearly RMB 16 million, with hi-tech materials and aerodynamic principles both applied to prevent dust.

¡¡¡¡Digitising environmental protection results

¡¡¡¡After ¡°The 10th Five Year Plan¡±, Qingdao Port had its throughput soar from 103.71 million to 265.02 million tons, a rise of 155.5%; meanwhile, its 90.5% rise in energy consumption, from 81,360 tons of standard coal to 155,010 tons, is far lower than throughput growth, with unit energy consumption dropping 25.44%. Meanwhile, a total of 80.19 million kwh, 14,128 tons of oil, 7,749 tons of coal and 5.03 million tons of water has been saved. At present, all new manufacturing equipment Qingdao Port purchases employ energy-saving technologies and configurations. Firstly, in crane technology, Qingdao¡¯s gate machines all have the world¡¯s most advanced Alternating Current Frequency Conversion technology with them. Secondly, mobile machineries are selected according to Euro ¢ó emission standard; 98.5% of machinery and electrical equipments have reached energy-saving standards; 100% of newly-completed projects as well as newly-purchased equipments are energy-saving ones. Thus, all measures have effectively and significantly promoted strategies to save energy and reduce emissions.
